In 2006, our environmental compliance performance improved significantly from the prior year. The total number of environmental incidents was down 33%, and the incidents were lower in severity. Notices of violation from agencies were down 39%, and government reportable events were down 45%. Environmental fines paid globally in 2006 were up somewhat from the prior year, but remained very low for our industry at $89,000.
The improvement in performance is a direct result of a number of environmental enhancement projects that were implemented heading into the new year. We continue to measure and assess our performance on an ongoing basis, undertaking corrective actions and capital projects where necessary to further eliminate gaps in our compliance performance.
In addition, we began implementing a new environmental management software package in 2006 that will automate our compliance management and tracking globally. It will be deployed in the U.S. in late 2007 and within our global operating regions over the next three years. The system will house all regulatory requirements for our facilities, manage compliance tasks, and perform emission checks, serving as a platform from which we can further drive continuous improvement. |
